Belle Canto (BC) is always looking for new members to join us. Below are some frequently asked questions about the audition process and Belle Canto. If you are interested in joining, please contact Lynne Lash by email at or by calling (609) 618-2398.

Who are we?

The Sarasota-based Belle Canto is a chorus of approximately 20 singers, conducted by Elizabeth Goldstein. In addition to fall and spring concerts in the Sarasota area, the Belles perform at conferences, schools, retirement facilities, and collaborate with local choral and instrumental musical groups. The BC performs a diverse repertoire in the original languages, from eleventh-century Gregorian chants to modern pieces.

What kind of musical experience is required of incoming singers?

We are open to any women, high school age and up.  New singers are expected to have some choral experience and be able to read music of some complexity, be able to learn text in other languages, occasionally memorize for performance, and be flexible in singing vocal parts.

What is the audition process?

There are two elements to the audition.

  1.  Singing:  Please choose one prepared piece, no more than three (3) minutes in length.  Memorization is not required.  Please bring two copies of the music, one copy for the provided accompanist.  No a cappella auditions will be heard.  The audition will also consist of a voice quality/range check and singing scales.
  2. Sight-reading:  You will also be asked to clap a short, rhythmic section as well as sing several short musical phrases at sight.

There will be a brief interview. Each audition takes around twenty minutes. Please bring a filled-in copy of this information form to your audition.

To schedule an audition, please contact Lynne Lash by email at or by calling (609) 618-2398.

When do we rehearse?

Rehearsals are held on Monday evenings, 5:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., and on some Saturday mornings during the winter season, at the First United Methodist Church, Sarasota.

How much does membership cost?

The cost for a season is $75, plus a donation of $5 for the Sunshine Fund. This covers the cost of all music and contributes to the BC’s operating expenses.

Where and when do we perform?

The concert season consists of two sets of concerts, one in November and one in March/April. Traditionally, BC has been privileged to present concerts at The First United Methodist Church. We also perform at other local venues, as far north as Anna Maria Island and as far south as Ft Myers.

In addition to our regular concert season, BC performs at various events.

What is the concert attire?

The BC requires that each singer furnish their own costume of a black scoop-necked, ¾ sleeve black top, black pants, a colored pashima stole, plain black shoes and hose.

What other opportunities are there?

In addition to singing at all scheduled performances, members also may contribute to the smooth functioning of the organization by volunteering their skills in finance, stage setup, publicity, and the like.
